Settling down to watch Working Girl (a bit of NY nostalgia now that I’m in Jersey City – temporarily – I’d like to make that clear) and my building’s fire alarm went off.

I don’t know what surprised me more; the shock of a potential fire when you are on the 10th floor of a building and have an intense dislike of stairs, or the loud voice the suddenly appears IN YOUR APARTMENT to tell you about it!!

Quite proud of myself though. Instant leap off couch, laptop into handbag, passport and jewelry from draw and into bag, pants and jersey on. Right kind of shoes on and only a small moment of panic when I couldn’t find the damn keys.

A false alarm of course though it was a good practice run. I’ve never had to do that before and I suppose I should think of keeping a bag in the cupboard by the front door with passport and necessities though the South African in me just thinks that’s making it easier for the burglars…

On a positive note it means I did take a walk around the neighborhood while they turned the sirens off. Exploring neighborhood = good. Wasting $8 for the worst coffee and cake ever = bad.

And then! When I get into the lift to come back upstairs – an old man steps in and farts! Out loud! And doesn’t even apologise!!

Aah, life’s ups and downs.

A long overdue post but still worth writing it!

The Alexander McQueen exhibition was really a fitting tribute and a truly beautiful collection of work. The book is sitting on my coffee table waiting to be delivered to someone in Cape Town who will appreciate it greatly.

Aside from waiting in a queue for two hours it was absolutely worth it. There are rumors of the collection making an appearance at the V&A in London and I’ll be in the queue again if so .

Apartment decorating

I’m quite excited about having a new apartment to decorate.
Of course I always manage to pick the challenges which are going to give me the toughest time – apartments in New York are ridiculously expensive, small, often in poor condition and the market is highly competitive – so choosing to get excited about this is probably a bad idea and is going to lead to major stress.

However, I do love to dream and I’ve always loved a good DIY and decorating project and really haven’t done anything like this for ages so I’m getting stuck in

I started with some extensive web research and although I haven’t built a mood board I’ve got loads of tabs open with great colours, fabrics and pictures. Lots more choice in terms of styles and stores than in the UK and the pricing of furniture is more affordable. Goods news for me and a great start to my challenge

Some more posts coming soon re: look and feel, some crockery and what is to *hopefully* soon be Andy and I’s new apartment.

The part that makes my little heart hurt are the dark sketched lines. They are just perfectly placed and such a perfect counter balance to the beading and embroidery.

Back in New York

So here I am, back in NY for a week and it’s 9/11 memorial fever.

I’m not sure how I feel about the whole thing, it was a tragedy indeed but the Americans tend to celebrate the tragedy rather than mourn and it just all feels a bit over the top.

Anyway, it’s a great city and I certainly plan on enjoying it over the next few weeks, months and years. Though I’ve been warned that may change when winter comes…
